Cockton lists behaviorism among dead ideas, and I agree, but I claim
that AI (mainly Newell and Simon) played as substantial role in killing it.
Even the easiest performances of their Logic Theory Machine matched
human performance far better than could any conceivable (by any
behavioral scientists since the 1960s) behaviorist model.
Cockton lists the following "dead ends".
DEAD ENDS
Computational Lingusitics, continuous speech understanding, intelligent vision,
reliable expert systems which do not require endless maintenance, human
problem solving, the physical symbol system hypothesis, knowledge representation
formalisms using computable models.
How does he distinguish a dead end from an ongoing effort that has not
yet achieved its goals? Was the effort to find the physical basis for
heredity suggested by Mendel at a dead end in 1952 just before the
structure of DNA was determined? Vitalists may have claimed that it
was.
I don't consider any of the lines of research or propositions he
mentions to be dead ends, though some may be stuck at the moment.
Alas, he doesn't mention the approach I love to defend - namely
the logicist approach unless he includes it in the physical
symbol hypothesis or representation formalisms using computable
